Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free,
and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. -GALATIANS 5:1

Of the 122 million equines found around the world, no more than 10 percent are clinically sound. Some 10 percent (12.2 million) are clinically, completely and unusably lame. The remaining 80 percent (97.6 million) of these equines are some what lame... and could not pass a soundness evaluation or test. [American Farriers Journal, Nov./2000, v.26, #6, p.5.]

The horses hoof wall grows at such a rate that it must be maintained approx. every four to six weeks. Natural hoof care or true natural trimming is becoming one of the most important factors in maintaining a healthy horse. Diet and exercise are extremly important also; this means room to freely move around, hay and feed at ground level, fresh water, salt and minerals that do not contain sugar/molasses. A horse also needs social activity, another horse would be the best choice.

Natural hoof care allows the hoof to expand and contract as the horse travels. It is this hoof mechanism or flexing of the hoof that is necessary for optimal circulation. There is also a biomechanical advantage to your horse; natural wear from natural movement.

The hoof model is of course the wild mustang. Natural hoof care practitioners know and understand why it works for the wild mustang, Using the wild mustang hoof model, natural hoof care achieves the same soundness in the domesticated horse that does not travel 20 miles a day.

If you are fortunate to have a competent Natural Hoof Care Practitioner, let your professional keep your horses on a schedule year round. Most people want to neglect their horses feet when they are not using their horse, and that is exactly why most domestic hooves are in the state they are in. It will pay big dividends and save you money in the long run by reducing your vet bill simply by maintaining your horses' hooves year round. The horse world is convinced that a horse must be shod because most horse owners wait until the hoof appears too damaged to trim. It is a must to trim before damage is done, not after. Here is something to think about, professionals try to shape the hoof because the coffin bone shapes the hoof in later years, but it is the hoof that shapes the coffin bone in a foal. Foals' hooves need to be maintained from the beginning!
